3 Ways New Gutters Help Your Home

3 Ways New Gutters Help Your HomeRoofs get plenty of well-deserved attention, but the same can’t be said for their trusty sidekicks – the gutters.

This is unfortunate because new gutters, that are well-maintained, are essential to the efficacy of your home’s roofing system and gutters also help to protect your home from leaks, water damage, foundation deterioration and more.

3 Ways New Gutters Benefit Your Home

Most homeowners associate gutters with rain drainage, and that’s certainly one of their main purposes. However, gutters and downspouts provide additional benefits as well:

Protection for your foundation (and basement)

Gutters are designed to draw water off the roof, away from the structural components and down to ground level. However, well-designed gutters don’t stop there, the downspouts continue into a designated drain and/or away from the home’s foundation/basement. This prevents the earth beneath the foundation from becoming flooded and/or so saturated that foundational shifts or deterioration occur.

Any deterioration or shifting in the stability of your foundation is not only costly, but can lead to structural damage throughout the home.

Prevent mold and mildew damage

Our hot and humid Texas climate provides the perfect setting for mold and mildew colonies to proliferate. If your gutters are old, leaky or are installed too close to the home, standing water can run down – or seep into – the interior spaces of your exterior walls.

Unfortunately, by the time you see evidence of mold and mildew, you have a big job on your hands, including the repair and/or replacement of any structural damage, as well as eliminating any existing mold/mildew colonies. After that, you’ll have to repair any resulting issues with insulation, sheetrock, drywall, trim, paint, etc.

Prevent damage from ice dams

Ice dams result from a combination of factors, and improperly installed gutters are one of them. If you’re doing your part to keep the gutters free of debris – both seasonally and between storms – new, continuous (seam-free) gutters minimize the ability for ice dams to form in the first place.
